The buckle is lost wax-cast in England from solid bronze, using a caster's pattern hand constructed in England.
The 'hook' buckle was the third buckle in Tender's collection, and is an experiment around the idea of a classic Western buckle. A normal western belt buckle has a face plate on the outside, concealing a loop and a stud. The free end of the belt passes through the loop and catches on the stud. For the hook buckle, the idea was to eliminate the plate, revealing the loop and stud. However, the stud on a plate buckle points inwards, and can pop out if the wearer's jeans are pushing against it too hard. The stud, or hook, on Tender's interpretation points outwards so that the mechanism becomes more secure as pressure is put on it from inside.
Prior to the launch of the Trestle Shop, all of Tender's belt buckles have been cast in brass, an alloy of copper and zinc. This buckle, however, is cast from bronze, a similar alloy but with a higher copper content. The extra copper gives bronze a slightly darker, pinker, cast, and over time it will patinate darker than brass does.
'Loops' belts are made with cotton webbing. Wattle-tanned leather wallets are made unstained or hand-dyed with black logwood. To keep the leather supple and in top condition we recommend using pure mutton tallow Boot Grease.
