Tender's rib socks are knitted and hand linked in England from raw unbleached cotton and nylon yarns. They are made with a loop-back, or terry, double knit sole, which makes them especially comfortable, and appropriate to wear even with heavy boots.
Traditional hosiery (like these socks) is knitted as a long continuous tube of many socks, which are then cut apart into individual socks. These are then hand linked, which means that the open sock has the two sides knitted together, leaving a flat, seamless, join at the toe. The top, open, end of the sock is finished in the original knitting process- a few lines are knitted before the next sock using a water-soluble fibre called Solvron. This gives enough space for the socks to be cut apart without ravelling the socks themselves. The first time the socks are washed (or in dyeing), this loose yarn washes away, leaving a clean tight edge.
Just as Tender's 'Unborn' jeans are cut from raw unsanforized denim and will shrink to size at the first wash, so the first wash for these socks will tighten the cotton fibres, bringing them to the correct finished size, and it will also dissolve the remaining Solvron yarn around the ankle.
Tender's hand linked cushion-sole socks are also available hand dip-dyed with woad, and dyed black with logwood.
